Fund raising with Red Day for Haiti

Haiti update

Haiti Update:03 February 2010

Glasgow the Caring City and our Scottish partnership for the relief of suffering in Haiti has been making progress in the following areas:

Health: Caring for the children of Haiti
To date we have managed, in partnership with fellow Scottish & American charity partners, to deliver several high value shipments of medical aid directly into Haiti.
The consignment which includes a wide range of pharmaceuticals, standard medical equipment, sundries and protective equipment was flown directly into Haiti and has helped us to create a clinic & drop-in facility at the Good Samaritan School, Cite Soleil.
In total, we have contributed to the shipment of £2,000,000 of pharmaceutical supplies from the USA and the air freight of a further £20,000

Communication: Effective Local Information Exchange
Our local implementation partners The Good Samaritan Foundation have been key to the rapid response which has saved many lives.
Part of the rapid reaction response was to participate in a local conference which assessed losses, needs and strategy. As a result, things in Cite Soleil are now being coordinated effectively and to the wider benefit of the community.
We have been able to make transfers of cash via the Dominican Republic and later this week Dr Alex Haxton from WER UK will be in the region providing expert help and development support. Thankfully, modern lines of communication are open and have been for several weeks now.

Nutrition & Water: Basic Essentials
Thanks to funds raised in Scotland, our local partners have been able to buy food & water to provide for their community. By day 3 in the aftermath of the quake supplies were onsite and being distributed to those most vulnerable. Thanks to the immediate cash donations from our country, coupled with those from other areas of the world, we successfully sourced essential goods when stocks were scarce.
There is now a continued feeding, water and general nutrition programme established at the Good Samaritan Centre in Cite Soleil providing ongoing support.

Shelter: Provision of safe spaces for families
Shelters; tents, tarpaulins, sheeting etc was secured from sources in the Dominican Republic. Resources of this type are scarce so we have procured what is available to us, with the overall aim of sheltering those most at risk.
In the immediate aftermath of the quake around 2000 people took shelter at the Good Samaritan Centre. This number, thanks to a variety of support strategies has now reduced to 1000. Some of the children & families from the Good Samaritan school were moved to a seminary outside of Port au Prince for their own safety and comfort.

Shipments: En Route
Glasgow the Caring City, on behalf of the partnership, has applied for an emergency support grant from the Scottish Government. The basis of this grant is to fund the immediate shipment of 2 aid containers from Florida consisting of locally required materials and emergency supplies. We await news from the Grant body, who as we appreciate, are extremely busy.
There will be shipments of essential goods leaving Glasgow for Haiti in the coming weeks. Medicine, nutrition drinks and a 50 bed clinic are already in-stock at our Glasgow warehouse and available for immediate dispatch to the disaster zone.
A public appeal for clothing and essential items will be made in the coming days

Events: What's happening
Several events are taking place across Scotland in the coming weeks to raise support for our Haiti Appeal.
