Haiti update

Haiti: Prograss Update: 13 February 2010

Ross Galbraith. Project/Appeal Manager

The following is a brief summary of the key responses being made to the ongoing Haiti Relief effort. We are achieving the following, in partnership:

Thus far our public appeal in Scotland has gathered:

  • £15,000 in unrestricted emergency aid funding
  • £15,000 in restricted development aid
  • £17,000 grant funding from the Scottish Government

In addition, $2million of medical supplies shipped directly from Florida to Haiti, via Dominican Republic
A further £20,000 of supplies flown directly from the UK to Dominican Republic, onward to Haiti
The following details the next step of our relief support plan:

  • 2 x 40ft containers of medical, nutrition & hygiene products from Florida
  • 1 x 20ft container of shelters, nutrition, medical aid from Glasgow
  • 1 x 40ft container of shelters, hygiene & nutrition products from Glasgow

In addition we have invested in the following development purchases:
Phase One: 1 x Solar, Mobile Water Treatment plant producing 2000ltrs of fresh water daily
New, High Grade, 6 man tents for immediate shelter provision
£10,000 reconstruction costs for the Good Samaritan School
Part-funding of shipping costs.

Phase Two:
Developing a locally managed and sustainable funding programme sponsored by Glasgow4Haiti funds. Part-funding for further shipping costs
Further £5000 investment in reconstruction at the Good Samaritan School
We are delighted to see a spread of funds which address short, medium and long term aid solutions. We are, where possible, address immediate needs with sustainable options for example the solar water treatment unit. Our focus is on the Glasgow4Haiti fund invested in targeted and strategic ways.
Additionally, we want to make connection with other Scottish Charities working in Haiti, looking at ways of cooperating efficiently for the greatest benefit. This includes joined up shipping plans and sustainable infrastructure projects.
Finally, I would wish to informally thank each and every donor for their generosity and support. We will be hosting regional catch-up sessions', focusing on what has happened in Haiti and how your money is benefiting the children of this poor nation.
